Dental Implants Are Excellent. They're Also Not What Most People Expect.
What the Brochures Don't Cover about Dental Implants
Dental implants have a genuinely impressive track record. Studies put the five-year success rate at 95 to 98% when placed by experienced clinicians (Impressions Dental, 2025). That's hard to argue with. But "success rate" doesn't tell you what the first week feels like, how long the process actually takes, or which health factors could complicate your outcome. Most of what patients tell us they wish they'd known has nothing to do with whether implants work. It's about what to expect along the way. This post covers the things we've found most people don't know going in, written plainly, without sugarcoating.

The Honest Details About Dental Implants Most Dental Practices Skip Over
The Timeline Is Longer Than You Probably Think
When people hear "dental implant," many imagine a single appointment. The reality is although you can get permanent teeth in 24 hours, the entire process is a multi-stage process that typically spans four to nine months, sometimes longer. Here's the rough sequence: your tooth is removed if it hasn't been already, the implant post is placed in the jawbone, then you wait. That waiting period, usually three to six months, is osseointegration, the process where the titanium post fuses with your jawbone. Once complete, the abutment and crown go on. If bone grafting is needed first, which is common in patients who've had a missing tooth for a while, add several more months to the front end. This isn't a flaw in the process. It's what makes implants permanent. See our dental implants service page for a more detailed treatment overview.

Recovery Is Manageable, But the First Few Days Require Real Rest
Most patients are surprised by two things: how manageable the discomfort is, and how much rest their body actually needs. Research published in PMC's review of patient recovery perceptions found that most patients recovered within four days of implant placement, though eating difficulties could last close to a week. Over-the-counter pain relievers handle most of the discomfort. Swelling peaks around day two or three, then subsides. What catches people off guard is that their body is doing significant healing work even when they feel fine. Pushing back into hard foods too early is one of the most common ways patients slow their own recovery. Smoking is also the single largest modifiable risk factor for implant failure. Read more about what to expect in our dental implant recovery and pain guide.

None of this is meant to discourage you. From what we've seen over years of placing implants, well-informed patients heal better, follow post-op instructions more carefully, and end up happier with their results. The timeline is real, the recovery is real, and so is the outcome: a tooth that looks, feels, and functions like your natural one.
