We use a combination of visual examination, physical evaluation, and advanced screening tools when needed to catch abnormalities as early as possible. Our process includes:
Visual Inspection
We look for any unusual sores, patches, lesions, discoloration, or changes in tissue texture throughout your mouth, lips, tongue, cheeks, and gums.Palpation of Oral Tissues
Gently feeling the lymph nodes, jaw, and throat area helps us detect lumps, swelling, or tenderness that may indicate underlying concerns.Tongue & Throat Examination
We assess mobility, texture, and signs of irritation or inflammation at the base of the tongue and back of the throat.Advanced Screening Tools (Optional)
For high-risk patients or unclear findings, we may use light-based or dye-assisted tools to enhance visibility and assess tissue health.

Oral cancer can develop without pain or obvious symptoms in the early stages, which is why regular screenings during your dental visits are so important. We perform screenings during your routine cleanings and exams, and it only takes a few minutes.
You may be at higher risk for oral cancer if you:
Use tobacco products (smoking or smokeless)
Consume alcohol heavily or frequently
Have a history of human papillomavirus (HPV)
Have prolonged sun exposure (especially affecting the lips)
Are over age 40
Have a family history of cancer
Common early signs include:
Persistent mouth sores that don’t heal
Red or white patches in the mouth
Lumps or thickening in the cheeks or neck
Difficulty swallowing or moving the jaw, or tongue
Numbness or pain in the mouth, lips, or face
If we detect anything suspicious, we’ll discuss next steps right away, which may include monitoring, a referral for a biopsy, or consultation with a specialist.
