Dental Sealants: An Extra Layer of Protection Against Cavities

Brushing and flossing are the best ways to prevent cavities, but even the most diligent cleaners can miss spots. The back teeth (molars) are particularly vulnerable because they have deep grooves and pits where food and bacteria can hide, often out of reach of your toothbrush bristles.

At Gardens Implant & Cosmetic Dentistry, we believe in stopping problems before they start. That is why we offer Dental Sealants, a simple, effective, and painless way to "seal out" decay.

A dental sealant is a thin, protective coating made of a special plastic material. It is painted onto the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, where it bonds quickly into the grooves, forming a smooth shield over the enamel. Think of it as a raincoat for your tooth.

EXPERTISE

Why Choose Gardens for Your Preventative Care?

Prevention is the heart of our family practice. Whether for your child or yourself, we provide high-quality preventative treatments to save you from drilling and filling later.

  • Family-Centered Approach: We are a dental home for all ages. We routinely place sealants for children as their permanent molars come in, setting them up for a cavity-free childhood.

  • Advanced Materials: We use modern, BPA-free sealant materials that are durable and tooth-colored, so they are virtually invisible when you smile or speak.

  • Comprehensive Checks: We don't just apply sealants blindly. Dr. Sujit Shakya performs a thorough exam first to ensure no decay is trapped underneath, using digital imaging to verify the tooth is healthy before sealing it.

PROCEDURE

The Quick & Painless Procedure

Getting sealants is one of the easiest dental procedures you will ever experience. It takes only a few minutes per tooth and requires no drilling, no shots, and no numbing.

  1. Cleaning: We thoroughly clean and dry the tooth to ensure no bacteria are trapped.

  2. Conditioning: A mild gel is applied to the chewing surface for a few seconds. This roughs up the enamel microscopically to help the sealant bond securely.

  3. Application: We rinse and dry the tooth again, then paint the liquid sealant material into the grooves.

  4. Curing: We use a special curing light to harden the material instantly.

  5. Done! You can chew and eat immediately after the appointment.

TESTIMONIAL

Patient Success Story: A Mom's Peace of Mind

Actual Patient Scenario

The Challenge: "Emily" brought her 7-year-old son, Leo, in for a check-up. Leo’s first permanent molars had just come in, but he struggled to brush all the way in the back. Emily was worried because she had many cavities as a child and wanted to spare Leo from the drill.

The Solution: Dr. Shakya examined Leo and confirmed deep grooves in his molars that were trapping food. He recommended dental sealants. The procedure took less than 15 minutes, and Leo watched cartoons the whole time, feeling zero pain.

The Result: Two years later, Leo is still cavity-free. The sealants are holding strong, blocking out sugar and bacteria. Emily told us, "It was so easy and affordable. knowing his teeth are protected gives me such relief."

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Do sealants replace brushing?

No. Sealants are an extra layer of defense, but they only cover the chewing surface. You still need to brush twice a day and floss daily to clean the sides of your teeth and the areas between them.

How long do sealants last?

Sealants can protect teeth from decay for up to 10 years, but they can wear down or chip over time due to chewing forces. We check them at every routine cleaning and can easily touch them up or replace them if needed.

Do they look noticeable?

Not at all. The sealant material is either clear, white, or slightly tinted to match your tooth color. It is virtually invisible to anyone else.

Is the material safe?

Yes. Dental sealants have been proven safe and effective by the American Dental Association and major health organizations worldwide. We use high-quality materials free from harmful levels of chemicals.

Does insurance cover sealants?

Most dental insurance plans cover sealants for children under the age of 18 as a preventative benefit (often at 100%). Adult coverage varies by plan. Our team will happily check your benefits for you.
