Pimple on the Gum? What a Gum Boil Really Means

Why That Bump Is More Than a Pimple

A pimple-like bump on the gum, often called a gum boil or a dental fistula, is usually a sign of infection draining from an abscessed tooth or the gum tissue, not a harmless blemish. The bump forms as pus finds a path to the surface, which can briefly ease the pressure and pain, but the infection underneath is still active and will not clear on its own. That is why a gum boil should always be evaluated promptly, since the infection can spread to the surrounding bone and tissue if it is ignored. Our guide to a dental abscess explains how serious these infections can become.

What Causes a Pimple on the Gum?

Tooth Abscess, Gum Infection, and More

A gum boil almost always points to a source of infection nearby. The usual culprits include:

  • A tooth abscess from deep decay or a dead nerve, where infection at the root drains through the gum.

  • Advanced gum disease, a periodontal infection in a deep pocket that our periodontal team treats.

  • A cracked tooth that lets bacteria reach the inside of the tooth.

  • Trapped food or debris, or lingering infection near an old root canal.

A telling clue is that a gum boil often comes and goes, shrinking when it drains and returning as it refills, which means the source still needs treatment.

What to Do About a Gum Boil (and What Not to Do)

Do Not Pop It, Treat the Source

Resist the urge to squeeze or pop the bump, because that pushes bacteria deeper and does nothing to fix the cause. For temporary relief you can rinse with warm salt water and keep the area clean, but the lasting solution is to treat the source. Depending on the cause, our dentists may recommend root canal therapy for an abscessed tooth, deep cleaning and periodontal care for a gum infection, or, in some cases, removing a tooth that cannot be saved. Antibiotics can help control spreading infection but do not replace removing the source. Seek emergency dental care right away if you develop facial swelling, a fever, or any trouble swallowing.
