Most braces and Invisalign issues, such as a poking wire, a loose bracket, or a lost aligner, are uncomfortable but not true emergencies, and you can usually manage them at home until you are seen. The few that need quicker attention involve severe pain, swelling, a mouth injury, or a wire stuck in the cheek or gum that you simply cannot relieve. Knowing the difference helps you stay calm and protect the progress of your orthodontic treatment or Invisalign.

Quick Fixes With Orthodontic Wax and More
For traditional braces, a little orthodontic wax solves most problems until your repair visit:
A poking wire: cover the sharp end with orthodontic wax, or gently tuck it back with the clean eraser end of a pencil. Only as a last resort, and if it is very long and sharp, carefully trim it with sanitized clippers.
A loose or broken bracket: if it is still attached to the wire, leave it in place, cover it with wax, and call to schedule a repair.
Mouth soreness or a sore spot: rinse with warm salt water and use wax over the irritating area.
A swallowed piece: this is usually harmless, but call us, and seek urgent care if you have any trouble breathing.

Keep Your Treatment on Track
If you lose or break an aligner, the most important thing is to not leave your teeth without one, since they can drift back. As a general rule, put your previous aligner back in to hold your progress, or move to the next aligner if you were already close to your switch day, and then call us for guidance and a replacement. Keep wearing your aligners for the recommended hours each day, and always store them in their case, because most lost aligners were wrapped in a napkin and thrown away. If a clear aligner attachment breaks off or an edge is cutting your gum, leave it alone and let our team smooth or repair it.
